Trump Launches USD10B Defamation Lawsuit Against BBC
Filed in Miami federal court, the $10 billion legal action targets a 2024 Panorama program that Trump's attorneys claim stitched together statements separated by nearly 60 minutes while overlaying images of demonstrators advancing on Congress — visuals captured before the president's remarks had even commenced.
"They had me saying things that I never said… They actually put terrible words in my mouth," Trump told reporters on Monday.
The network conceded its error last month, acknowledging the editing created "the mistaken impression that President Trump had made a direct call for violent action" and issued a public apology. Chairman Samir Shah personally contacted Trump expressing "sincere regret" while committing to permanently shelve the disputed footage.
Trump had previously blasted the BBC for what he characterized as electoral interference, noting the documentary debuted merely seven days ahead of last year's presidential vote. The complaint brands the broadcast "a brazen attempt to interfere in and influence the Election's outcome to President Trump's detriment."
The legal filing demands $5 billion for reputational harm and another $5 billion under Florida's Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act. Trump's lawyers labeled the network's actions "malicious," contending the targeted cuts "could never have occurred by accident." A representative charged the BBC maintains "a long pattern of deceiving its audience in coverage of President Trump, all in service of its own leftist political agenda."
The BBC refused additional comment after the suit's filing, though earlier statements indicated zero communication from Trump's legal representatives following their mea culpa. The corporation, financed via mandatory licensing fees across the UK, insists there is "no legal basis" for the defamation allegations and pledged to mount a vigorous defense in court "to protect our license fee payers."
