Trump Signals Breakthrough in Ukraine Peace Deal

(MENAFN) President Donald Trump asserted Monday that diplomatic efforts to terminate the Russia-Ukraine war have advanced further than at any moment since the conflict ignited in 2022.

"I think we're closer now than we have been ever and we'll see what we can do. We want to save a lot of lives," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, pointing to what he characterized as extensive and fruitful discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and numerous European counterparts.

The American leader disclosed he had engaged with officials from Germany, Italy, Finland, France, UK, Poland, Norway, Denmark, and the Netherlands, alongside NATO representatives, describing the exchanges as "very long and very good."

Trump further revealed he has held repeated discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin and perceives both nations desire to end hostilities, while conceding challenges exist in maintaining consensus between Moscow and Kyiv.

"We've had good talks with Russia, and I think they'd like to get back to a more normal way of life," he stated.

A US official briefing journalists earlier indicated Trump was "really pleased" with diplomatic advances achieved during European negotiations, estimating roughly 90% of disputed matters between the adversaries have been settled, though critical issues persist.

Administration sources revealed that contemplated security protections for Ukraine incorporate "Article Five-like" guarantees—alluding to NATO's collective defense commitment—with Trump prepared to present these arrangements to the US Senate for formal ratification.

High-stakes negotiations have intensified in Berlin since Sunday, convening Ukrainian, American, and European representatives.

Diplomats are slated to reconvene this weekend, possibly in Miami, Florida, to advance discussions, according to officials.
