Russia Denounces U.S. Oil Sanctions Against Cuba
Zakharova's condemnation came in direct response to media inquiries about a U.S. executive order released Thursday, which threatens punitive tariffs against any nation conducting oil sales to the Caribbean island nation.
Unilateral sanctions imposed on sovereign and independent nations while bypassing the United Nations, its Charter, and established international law principles are "categorically unacceptable," Zakharova emphasized.
The Russian diplomat characterized Washington's action as another extreme escalation of America's decades-long maximum pressure campaign against Cuba, designed to economically strangle the island through systematic isolation.
Zakharova further stressed that such coercive economic measures undermine global diplomatic norms and represent a dangerous precedent in international relations. The U.S. order adds to an already extensive sanctions regime that has restricted Cuban access to global markets and financial systems for years.
