Trump Deletes Racist Video Targeting the Obamas After Backlash

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump removed a racist video from his social media account on Friday after intense criticism from across the political spectrum. The clip depicted former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama as apes, prompting widespread condemnation.

Earlier in the day, the White House defended the early-morning post, with a spokesperson dismissing the reaction as "fake outrage." Hours later, the video was taken down from Trump’s Truth Social account, with reports saying an unnamed official attributed the post to a staff member who shared it.

The White House did not provide a response to follow-up inquiries, according to reports.

The video, which appeared to be generated using artificial intelligence, featured the song “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” popularized by Disney’s The Lion King. It showed the smiling faces of the former president and first lady digitally placed on ape bodies, reinforcing racist stereotypes directed at Black people.

The post targeting the first Black US president appeared during Black History Month, a period dedicated to recognizing the achievements, contributions, and historical struggles of Black Americans.

The content triggered sharp criticism, including from members of Trump’s own party. One Republican senator wrote on social media, "Praying it was fake because it’s the most racist thing I’ve seen out of this White House. The President should remove it."

Another Republican lawmaker described the post as "totally unacceptable" and called on Trump to "take it down and apologize," according to reports.

Trump has not publicly addressed the incident and did not appear in public on Friday. The Obamas also declined to comment on the video, according to reports.
