Colombia’s Petro Slams Trump’s Remarks Amid Escalating Political Crisis
According to reports, Petro made the remarks in New York following his address to the UN Security Council on Wednesday, warning that Washington’s actions represent a breach of constitutional principles due to direct support for a specific contender.
The diplomatic tension comes as Colombia faces an unusual internal political crisis, including a controversial legislative decision to temporarily suspend Petro from office shortly before voters head to the polls.
The situation intensified after Trump posted on Truth Social a second message of support for conservative candidate Abelardo de la Espriella, praising his performance in the first round of the election held on May 31.
He wrote, “Congratulations to Colombian presidential candidate ‘El Tigre,’ (THE TIGER) Abelardo de la Espriella, a smart, strong, and tough leader, on his decisive victory in the first round of the Colombian Presidential Election!”
Trump added, “Abelardo fights tirelessly for, and loves his Great Country and people, just like I do for the United States of America.”
